Diesel costs may hurt the trucking industry

The turbulent economy has forced many companies to seek ways to save money. For instance, fuel prices remain a difficult expense for fleets to manage, and the price of diesel keeps rising.

Experts say that the trucking industry is experiencing a driver shortage, due to an aging workforce, a rebounding economy and new federal safety rules.

New trucker sleep study may not be valid

Some experts in the trucking industry have taken exception to the studies used by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) with regards to the 34-hour restart regulations, Trucking Info reports.

To help promote trucking safety, the Illinois Governor and General Assembly have formed a task force to investigate the use of GPS technology and a Designated Truck Route System.

Over the past week, trucking safety in the midst of winter storms has been a point of focus across the transportation industry.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that nearly 300,000 truck driving positions are expected to become available between 2008 and 2018.

In light of recent winter storms, some commercial vehicle operators are offering their advice on dealing with inclement weather to other members of their industry.

As part of an increased focus on trucker health and eco-friendliness, many companies are beginning to examine the possibilities that may be afforded by hybrid vehicles.
