Fleet management officials report signs of trucking industry's recovery

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that nearly 300,000 truck driving positions are expected to become available between 2008 and 2018. Recently released figures concerning growth in the transportation industry are supporting this prediction.

TransCore, a provider of problem-solving products for this sector, reported that truck loads and truck capacity numbers from across the country increased for the second week in a row.

During the week ending January 22, truck loads increased by 5 percent, while the number of truck postings rose by 4 percent. Furthermore, a load-to-truck ratio of 4.9:1 was recorded. This proportion was highest in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Idaho and Maine, while Western states reported unseasonably low rates.

This data was compiled using the company's U.S. Freight Index, which relies on reports from the DAT Network, the American Trucking Association and the U.S. Department of Energy.
