Focusing on truck driving safety, Volvo Trucks is working on ways to help truckers remain secure behind the wheel, while also helping companies save money by focusing on fuel efficiency, reported the Business Journal.

The news source said logistics and trucking companies in North Carolina are using technology solutions to help their fleets save money, with measures such as on-board computer systems and electric on-board recorders.

Frank Bio, product manager for trucks at Volvo Trucks North America, outlined to the source some other things that Volvo and Mack Trucks have done to improve safety and efficiency, which include stationary object detection systems, better aerodynamics and brake assists.

Failing to meet safety and other requirements can shut down a trucking company, which is what happened to U&D Service in Indianapolis that was recently closed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration because the company was thought to be an "imminent hazard" to public safety, reported the Indianapolis Star.

Indiana State Police and other federal investigators found that some of the trucking company's drivers did not speak English, and others did not have the proper licenses they needed to be a truck driver in the United States, said the paper.
