Trucking safety groups not thrilled about new FMCSA rulings

The reactions to the new trucking hour limits are running the gamut nationwide. Many advocates for the industry are not happy about the new restrictions and some are asking that the rulings return to negotiations or court, reports Trucking Info. Some do say that it will improve truck driving safety and the overall trucker health standard, but others feel the laws are too severe.

The Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety organization have already stepped in to declare that they find the laws unnecessary. The American Trucking Associations (ATA) have reached the same conclusion and say their biggest issue with the rule is that it may cause even more traffic on the nation's highways with additional big rigs.

"Over the next few days, ATA will be discussing the restart changes with its membership and will make a decision on whether to peruse legal action in the near future," Dave Osiecki, senior vice president of policy and regulatory affairs, said in a statement.

According to Fleet Owner, the new reduction from 82 hour work weeks to 70 hours allocated would not go into effect until 2013 if it was officially passed. Those opposed will take this time to support its deregulation.
