According to industry publication The Trucker, a recent report conducted by MaineWay Services found that commercial motor vehicles that are equipped with speed limiters were 50 percent less likely to get in a accident than those without the devices.

Due to the results from this recent report - requested by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Office of Analysis, Research and Technology - The American Trucking Associations, the Truckload Carriers Association and safety advocates support legislation that make it mandatory to use speed limiters to improve trucking safety, said the source.

"This rulemaking would respond to petitions from ATA and Roadsafe America to require the installation of speed limiting devices on heavy trucks," said a recent release from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. "In response, NHTSA requested public comment on the subject and received thousands of comments supporting the petitioners’ request."

According to Land Line Magazine, a recent Senate transportation bill was missing a number of provisions that were wanted by members of the trucking industry, including the addition of speed limiters to commercial vehicles, which is a major focus of the trucking industry.
