Trucking companies could save during off-peak hours in Staten Island

The Staten Island Advance reported the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey plans to provide a 10 percent discount to truckers on their monthly E-ZPass bills if they make more than 100 trips during off-peak hours.

The source said George Miranda, president of the Teamsters Joint Council 16, told boardmembers at a recent meeting that these discounts will make it more attractive for truckers to travel during off-peak times, which may reduce traffic and improve trucking safety.

"It would also promote a business-friendly environment, while ensuring that our regional infrastructure is properly maintained and will also go a long way to alleviate the burden on New York and New York's hardworking men and women in the commercial truck driving industry," said Miranda.

According to the paper, many Staten Island trucking and construction companies have been pushing for discounts on E-ZPass bills for years.

While these discounts may help smaller trucking fleets save money, Gail Toth, executive director of the New Jersey Motor Truck Association, told The Packer that future toll increases could eventually put local and regional trucking companies out of business.
