Trucking accidents increased; ATA says to not be discouraged

Unfortunately, the recent data on truck crashes show that more accidents and fatalities occurred in 2010 than in the previous year. However, organizations like the American Trucking Associations (ATA) say that this does not reflect on certain law changes that have occurred during this time frame and hopes to wait for more information before further decisions are made.

The ATA has been petitioning to government officials to hold off on feeling discouraged over the numbers until the true cause of the increase can be researched.

"We would hope that policymakers will avoid the 'error of recency,' by overemphasizing the newest data at the expense of the overall, long-term trend, which has been overwhelmingly positive," Bill Graves, chief executive officer of the ATA, said in a statement. "We look forward to seeing further analysis from DOT on crash types as well as how many miles American motorists and truck drivers traveled last year."

Truckers who are taking their compliance training for truck drivers or have recently completed their CDL training coursework should keep in mind that accidents could be on the rise, so adhering to safety and compliance laws at all times is key to keeping all motorists safe on the road.
