Truckers no longer allowed to use mobile phones while driving

Recent restrictions put forth by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration have barred truckers from using handheld mobile phones since the beginning of the new year.

The move was intended to improve truck driving safety, and will affect more than 4 million commercial truck drivers who have faced past issues dealing with distracted driving.

"I hope that this rule will save lives by helping commercial drivers stay laser-focused on safety at all times while behind the wheel," said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

According to research from the Department of Transportation, the act of reaching for or dialing a cellphone drastically increases the probability of drivers getting in an accident or swerving off the road.

State governments are taking note of the recent mobile phone legislation, with the Illinois House of Representatives recently proposing a a statewide ban on mobile phone use while driving.

The only way drivers would be able to use their phones while driving is through the use of hands-free devices.
