Truck driving safety is important during summertime on the road

Essential truck parts that receive heavy wear and tear are the tires, especially during hot summer months. In fact, a recent report by the U.S. Department of Transportation the importance of maintaining the wheels on big rigs to avoid potentially hazardous situations.

Pavement heats up in humid weather, and deflated tires at high speeds can cause enough friction for tears or explosions. These incidences can cause tragic mishaps that may have been prevented with regular maintenance.

Not only will proper tire inflation help avoid dangerous circumstances, it can also streamline a truck's performance by saving money on fuel. Tires that are kept at the correct inflation allow vehicles to run more efficiently. Trucks that have under-pressurized tires typically require more fuel than those that are properly inflated.

Secretary Ray LaHood says by routinely checking tires, truckers can prevent potential accidents.

"For your safety and the safety of others on the road, inspect your tires regularly and maintain the proper inflation," he said.
