Truck driving safety continues to break new records

Recent data released by the American Trucking Associations (ATA) says that 2009 was the best year for truck driving safety, reports the organization’s website.

Since 1975, accident and fatality rates have been recorded by the ATA. So far, the dangers of trucking have steadily decreased. In 2008, 1.37 deaths occurred per 100 million miles, and the following year it dropped 14 percent.

The ATA says this improvement can be attributed to many ongoing projects, such as an increase in vehicle regulations and boosts on involvement of local law enforcement. The organization has also implemented programs such as Share the Road to educate all drivers about proper techniques in dealing with large vehicles.

Truck driver for Wal-Mart Transportation Kenny Lowry says he is impressed with the recent statistics and appreciates the ATA program’s initiative to ensure trucking safety.

Lowry told the news source, “because the highways are our workplace we want them to be as safe as possible.” He added that “these improved safety figures show we are making a difference.”

More than 300 billion miles were driven by truckers in 2009 throughout the nation, according to The Federal Highway Administration.
