Those driving in the snow must focus on safety

With a seasonal weather system approaching the Midwest region of the United States, the Iowa Department of Transportation recently asked motorists in the state to be wary of the conditions and remember what they need to do while driving in the winter, reported Cedar Rapids, Iowa, ABC affiliate KCRG.

A few tips from the Iowa DOT include: make sure a vehicle's gas tank is full, never use cruise control, have the proper safety equipment in vehicles, and use caution when approaching a snow plow, reported the news source.

Truck driving safety also should be emphasized during the winter months. Truckers need to consider safety over speed when on their routes during a snow storm or when the roads are lined with snow. Drivers who have completed the appropriate online CDL training will know how to respond during harsh winter weather.

More safe driving tips can found in the San Angelo Standard-Times, a Texas-based news source, which talked to State Trooper Shawn Baxter.

Baxter told the news source that those driving in adverse condition must be sure to drive more slowly, clear snow from headlights and tail lights and inform others of traveling plans.
