Teamster Union General President Jim Hoffa recently called announced the the filing of counterarguments in a recent lawsuit filed against the U.S. Department of Transportation's pilot program to open the border to potentially dangerous and illegal Mexican trucks.

"U.S. commercial truck drivers must follow all U.S. safety regulations while Mexican drivers only need to follow selected Mexican regulations," said Hoffa. "The government is flat-out wrong to say Mexican trucks and drivers meet equivalent standards."

Hoffa said the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration allowing these foreign truck on the United States highways is "bizarre," and it serves as a risk to trucking safety. He also questioned how the FMCSA will monitor the safety precautions followed by these Mexican trucking fleets and how they will impact driving safety on the nation's highways.

Teamsters International Vice President Ken Hall told West Virginia's Charleston Gazette that Mexican fleets adhere to different safety precautions than those of U.S. fleets. They allege that Mexican trucks are much dirtier and their tires lack treads.
