Safety figures examined for commercial driving accidents
Government safety officials have recently been taking a closer look at their figures when it comes to dangerous driving habits among their commercial truck drivers, in hopes of improving the situation. One of the biggest issues is drivers who are navigating their big rigs while drowsy, overtired or under the influence of substances, which can cause unnecessary accidents on the road.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that roughly 17 percent of motor vehicle accidents involve a driver who is sleepy or unable to focus due to lack of rest. Nearly 1,500 fatal accidents occur on the road every year because a motorist was not alert enough to react properly to driving variables.
Truck drivers were involved in thousands of roadway accidents in 2008, which has been causing some officials to ramp up their safety regulations for these big rig and trailer drivers in recent years. Since more and more drivers are completing CDL training and heading out onto the road every year, it is important for officials to keep up with the data and continue to improve the laws that maintain safe conditions for all who use the roads.
