As roads become more crowded and the temperatures drop this winter, truckers and other motorists need to be extra aware of their surroundings to avoid potential accidents. Recently, American's Road Team Captains, a group of professional truckers who work towards ensuring truck driving safety, offered some tips and advice on how to best navigate the potentially hazardous conditions found on the nation's highways.
In case of a breakdown or vehicle malfunction, all truckers should have a kit in their cabin to assist them in handling difficult situations. Items such as bottled water, flares and a warm blanket could all come in handy during emergencies.
If possible, avoiding the road all together during bad weather is advisable. Truckers often are pressed for deadlines, but an accident could set them back even further if precautions are not taken.
Although big rigs are allowed to travel at posted speeds, factors such as snow and ice need to be considered when choosing how fast to drive. It can be tempting to want to continue on at a normal pace, but this could cause trucks to slide and crash, which may be circumvented at slower speeds.
