Road officials warn truckers who drive during storms

As hurricane season arrives in full swing, those involved in the trucking industry are preparing for the uncertain driving conditions that may occur during big storms. In Virginia, officials are urging motorists to be especially cautious if driving during severe weather, The Virginian Pilot reports.

Truckers who must navigate the highways before, during or after hurricanes along the West Coast this weekend could see heavy amounts of debris that may obstruct passageways, such as trees, parts of buildings or damaged bridges.

Those who have undergone CDL training in the past may have an easier time protecting themselves and ensuring trucking safety. However, The Weather Channel offers some additional tips to help drivers handle storms while on the road.

Having the truck cabin stocked with useful and easily accessible items may help in an emergency situation. Supplies such as a portable radio or extra water may be helpful if the truck breaks down.

Keeping a cell phone charged and the gas tank full will also provide the tools for a quick and safe escape from dangerous road conditions if the need arises.
