Restrictions for hazmat transporters are tightened by FMCSA

Created: Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011 05:01 pm

Truckers who haul potentially dangerous materials have to be extra cautious while navigating the nation's highways. Even those who undergo recurrent hazmat training still can fall risk to precarious situations. Recently, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has launched a campaign to regulate these specific drivers more carefully through extensive inspections and regulations, Transport Topics reports.

Previously, truckers were allowed to identify themselves as either being a hazmat carrier or a regular driver. Now, these commercial motorists will be categorized during compliance reviews and roadside inspections done by law enforcement and FMCSA officials. This special hazmat classification will be determined on the truck driver's biennial motor carrier identification report.

This new regulation will amend the previous law outlined in the CSA 2010 compliance initiative, also known as the Compliance, Safety and Accountability project.

According to the organization's website, the FMCSA has monitored the on goings of all commercial vehicle transportation throughout the country since its inception more than a decade ago. The group's officials are regularly updating the laws that truckers must adhere to, which keeps highways safe for all motorists.
