Proposed act by Senate could promote truck driver safety
A move that could drastically improve trucking safety came courtesy of the U.S. Senate, which recently passed the two-year, $109 billion, Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21), which is an effort to save lives, reduce injuries and save billions of dollars.
With car crashes the leading cause of death for American between 5- and 34-year-olds, this act, if enacted into law, is expected to address the unfinished safety agenda and protect the motoring public.
"MAP-21 is comprehensive, commonsense and cost-effective legislation that will dramatically improve safety for everyone on our highways - families sharing the road with large trucks, passengers riding intercity buses and inexperienced teen drivers getting behind the wheel for the first time," said Jackie Gillan, president of Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety.
Another safety issue that could hamper truck drivers throughout the world is driver fatigue. Many drivers for a number of trucking companies are pushing themselves to complete their routes and are not getting the sleep they need to exercise safe driving practices.
