Program offers trucking companies chance to pre-screen potential employees

Various government organizations are doing their best to ensure trucking safety for drivers and all motorist on the road, reports Business and Legal Sources. Officials are helping avoid accidents before they happen by pre-screening trucker hopefuls for clean and reputable backgrounds.

The Pre-Employment Screening Program has been used to screen almost 400,000 new truckers to check their previous driving safety records. It has been implemented by the Department of Transportation's (DOT) Federal Motor Carrier Safety Agency.

Ray LaHood, DOT secretary, says he feels this plan will raise the bar in preventing issues in the trucking industry.

"Our pre-employment screenings program is helping us put safe drivers behind the wheel of large trucks and buses," he told the news source.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation's website, fleet management owners need to pay a small fee to have access to the program. If they are in charge of a small business, they may be eligible for a small discount. Regular individuals are allowed to also use the database to look up people's driving records.
