Commercial vehicle operators who are unfamiliar with their routes may be putting themselves - as well as others on the road - at risk. However, there are many devices and driver training courses that can enable these professionals to maintain their safety.

Individuals who are fiddling with maps, printed directions or mobile devices while they are operating large vehicles can become distracted and increase their risk of accidents. Fortunately, some companies are creating navigation systems that were designed with truck drivers in mind.

For instance, Garmin recently released its dezl series, which is intended for use by over-the-road truck drivers. These devices provide users with directions, hour and mileage logs, truck speed limits as well as route planning and calculation tools.

In addition, these systems are programmed to locate repair and towing services that are registered with the National Truck and Trailer Services Breakdown Directory. This capability could become useful in the case of an emergency on the road.

Truck drivers who use these devices and complete driver training classes may be more likely to avoid accidents and work more efficiently.
