When an accident happens on the nation's freight hauling highways, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is often the first to respond during these difficult breaches in trucking safety. Recently, President Barack Obama endorsed a second term of the organization's chair, Deborah A P. Hersman, reports The Trucker.

Since 2004, Hersman has been involved with the committee by attending meetings, investigating transportation issues and participating on forum panels. Prior to her current job, Hersman was a staff member for the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.

Hersman has a commercial driver's license (CDL), and says she feels the work of the department is essential to decrease preventable accidents form occurring on the road.

"I am grateful for the faith that President Obama has placed in me and look forward to working with my fellow board members to make transportation - across all modes - safer for our citizens," she told the news source.

According to the NTSB's website, the organization has been ensuring the safety of both motorists and aviators since 1926. A new chairman of the department is nominated every two years.
