New device could improve driver safety

The holiday season is a particularly busy time for commercial vehicle operators. Because many people are traveling during the winter months, safety is a primary concern for everyone who shares the road.

Fortunately, there are many ways for trucking companies to ensure that their employees are using good practices while they are working. They may choose to enroll their workers in online driver training courses, or equip their vehicles with devices that can help ensure their well-being.

Takata recently unveiled one such tool - its SafeTraK3 electronic vision system. This tool intended to alert drivers when they are becoming fatigued and prevent accidents that can result from an operator's drowsiness.

When drivers begin swerving or unintentionally moving outside their lane, the system gives the operator a warning. While this tool is currently only available to commercial trucking companies, Takata officials are planning to create a version of the system for passenger vehicles in the future.

Coupling similar tools with driver safety training courses may enable commercial vehicle operators to learn their limits and implement better practices on the road.
