New bill will change the way highways undergo improvements

Created: Wednesday, February 1st, 2012 04:01 pm

A recent bill submitted by House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman John Mica and other legislators will push to improve highways across the United States, as well as improve truck driving safety.

With the nation's highways becoming a more pressing issue in the election year, Mica and other House Republicans have proposed the bill using federal funds to spend $260 billion over nearly five years to undertake road construction and other projects.

States will be able to use the money to make sure their roads don't become extremely deteriorated, as well as create jobs in the construction industry.

Leaders of the American Trucking Associations are proponents of the surface transportation bill, which will change the way highway projects and other issues will be resolved by the government.

"We are pleased that the bill includes a number of safety provisions, ranging from the creation of a drug and alcohol testing clearinghouse, stricter driver training requirements and takes steps to toward establishing the first-ever crashworthiness standards for large trucks, that ATA has consistently championed," said Bill Graves, president and CEO for the ATA.

The recently proposed legislation also tackles the issues of truck productivity and hours-of-service, which have been hot issues of debate in the trucking industry.
