Nebraska town halls address safety compliance

Created: Monday, January 23rd, 2012 02:01 pm

To help truckers with the new regulations set by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Compliance, Safety and Accountability program, the Nebraska State Patrol Carrier Enforcement Division will hold town meetings in six cities across the state.

Many of the new regulations emphasize truck driving safety. An example is the new cellphone ban, which restricts drivers from using their cellphone, without the use of a bluetooth device, while on the road

"Even if you’ve attended in the past, we would encourage you to attend one of the six meetings scheduled for 2012," said Captain Gerry Krolikowski, Carrier Enforcement Division Commander.  "There have been several updates that should be of interest to all drivers and operators of a commercial motor vehicle, including a ban on cell phones and texting."

The town hall meetings will be held in the cities of South Sioux City, Alliance, McCook, Gretna, Broken Bow and North Platte.

According to Bloomberg News, Nebraska is one of 10 states that has fully tested a federally mandated commercial licensing system that tests the medical condition of drivers. Other states have 20 months to set up the system, or the government could withhold highway funds.
