NTSB considers new rules for truck drivers to promote safety

Truck drivers understand the importance of being alert while on the job, as the safety of others and themselves depends on it.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is holding a forum to hear from federal regulators, safety experts and those in the trucking industry to find out what can be in order to keep the roads safe, according to The Associated Press.

However, it appears as though truck drivers are on the right track, as there have been fewer fatal accidents in recent years.

"There has been a lot of progress - the data does show that fatalities have come down - but there is still a lot of work that needs to be done," NTSB member Robert Sumwalt told the news provider.

CBS 47 TV, which provides news to Fresno, California, asked truck drivers what they felt the main cause of accidents are. Because the panel is considering cutting back on the number of hours drivers can spend on the road, the news provider reports that some truckers are against the measure because it could affect their pay.

While rest is important, those who are thinking of joining the profession may want to consider enrolling in online truck driver safety training.
