The overseers of trucking safety in the massive freight transportation industry play an essential part in keeping truck drivers protected while on the road. Recently, the Truckload Carriers Association awarded Don Lacy of Missouri the 2011 Safety Professional of the year, due to his role as director of safety with trucking company Prime Inc. reports Layover.com.

For more than 45 years, Lacy has been involved in the trucking industry. He began as an operations manager in 1989 and moved onto becoming director of safety in 1996. Thousands of drivers and trucks are managed by Lacy for Prime.

An important initiative started by Lacy was Prime University, which is a structured program to train truckers in safety technology, rollover prevention, communication and digital log bookkeeping.

Prime has kept the company's best outstanding safety record with Lacy in charge. Lacy says he knows how important it is to ensure that every driver and their vehicle is protected while on the job.

"Keeping drivers and the public safe on the road has always been my top priority," he told the news source.

According to Truckload.org, Harry Kimball of Oklahoma took home the honor in 2010.
