In-cab tech tools can improve safety

Recent data released by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety agency shows the potential value of technology in improving trucking safety. Fleets using inthinc Technology Solution's in-truck product combined for an average score in the top 5 percent in the driver safety category of the federal Compliance, Safety and Accountability initiative, while also scoring in the top 25 percent in vehicle maintenance and top 31 percent in fatigued driving.

"Accidents occur when there is a lack of safety controls," said Corey Catten, chief technical officer of inthinc. "Our technology empowers fleet managers with the tools they need to improve driver safety and remain compliant with growing FMCSA regulations."

Using it trademarked technology, inthinc is able to promote truck driving safety by improving driver behavior with GPS-based vehicle and trip tracking, and in-cab verbal coaching alerts for speeding, idling, seat belt use and aggressive driving.

Another effort to improve fleet management comes out of Jacksonville, Florida, where Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown recently hired a head of fleet management to focus on cost savings in the area.

Karim Kurji was named the new chief of fleet management, and brings in a lot of different experiences to help the Jacksonville area reduce its costs in fleet management as the city seeks innovative ways to deploy its public service vehicles.
