Government applauded for effort towards firmer seat belt laws

Seatbelts have been proven to save countless lives in accidents on the road. Recently, the American Trucking Association (ATA) commended the effort made federally to keep drivers safe while working, reports Truckline.

The ATA said that a recent survey shows truckers are now 13 percent more likely to wear their safety belt than in 2007. Though numbers seem to be increasing, the organization says the laws could be harsher.

Bill Graves, president of ATA, says he is glad that trucking safety seems to be of high importance among officials in the industry.

“Overall truck crash and fatality rates, including the fatality rate for truck drivers, have plummeted in recent years,” Graves told the news source. “While there are many factors contributing to these record-setting safety performance accomplishments, increasing seat belt usage by drivers is certainly among them.”

According to The Boston Globe, on the state level, Rhode Island has bills in the works for stricter seatbelt laws. New regulations would permit law enforcement to pull over motorists for only not wearing their belt.
