Federal website demonstrates hazards of inattentive driving

Arguably more than any other motorists, truck drivers need to be especially cautious when facing distractions on the road. The National Department of Transportation (DOT) has re-vamped its website to promote careful driving by avoiding cell phone use while behind the wheel.

The DOT has been regularly releasing videos online that show interviews with friends and family who have lost loved ones due to distracted driving. The most recent clip shows Dan and Wendy Lerch of Washington state, who lost their daughter due to speeding and cell phone use while operating a vehicle.

Ray LaHood, U.S. Transportation Secretary, said this campaign is designed to show that anyone could be involved in a tragic accident while driving.

"The loss of a bright and talented young woman like Heather is a tragic reminder of the epidemic of distracted driving on our roadways," he said.

Big rigs can cause irreversible damage if not handled correctly. The risk is only exacerbated when truckers use a phone or text. The DOT is hoping that their new website can support trucking safety to keep all motorists safe.
