FMSCA makes changes to SMS ratings

Created: Tuesday, March 27th, 2012 03:01 pm

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration recently released the improvements it made to its Carrier Safety Measurement System, which are intended to help trucking companies use greater measures for truck driving safety.

"We know the SMS isn’t perfect, and we designed it so it can be improved over time," said FMCSA’s Bryan Price, a member of the CSA team at the Mid-America Trucking Show. "What we want to do is give carriers an opportunity for several months to see how the changes impact your particular company and give us comments if something doesn’t make sense."

A few of the changes made to the SMS include strengthening the vehicle maintenance BASIC, renaming the cargo-related BASIC the hazardous materials BASIC, better aligning SMS with Intermodal Equipment Provider regulations and aligning violations that are included in SMS with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance.

Through the new changes to the SMS, drivers will be rated by the FMCSA to see how they are navigating the nation's roadways. Companies can see how they are rated by logging onto the FMCSA database.
