Debate over bridge from Michigan to Canada underway

When trucks are left idling in traffic for millions of hours every year across North America, the statistics can push fleet management owners and government officials into action. Not only does the traffic damage trucking companies’ revenue, it also is harmful towards the environment as extra emissions leak into the atmosphere.

Recently, there has been hot debate in Michigan over a bridge that leads into Canada, which is constantly congested and hurts the state’s trucking industry, reports Business Week.

The longest suspension bridge in the world lies between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. The maintenance of this bridge are overlooked privately by Manuel Moroun, who says that he would like to expand the lanes to finally ease traffic tension in this area. However, Governor Rick Snyder says he would rather construct a separate bridge all together to help the problem. Both men disagree on the matter, further putting the traffic flow on hold and causing trucking companies to lose millions of dollars every year.

According to The Toledo Blade, representatives from the American Trucking Association also support the second bridge proposal. Experts say that to ensure trucking safety, repairs to the old bridge or the creation of the second bridge need to happen as soon as possible.
