Connecticut enforcing stricter driver safety measures

Truckers who travel across the country may not realize that safety rules vary from state to state. In fact, some regions recently implemented new measures to make sure that operators who are working within their boundaries are safe and healthy.

For instance, Connecticut lawmakers began cracking down on unsafe drivers in October. This initiative was launched in response to a series of highway crashes involving large vehicles occurred in August, according to The Associated Press.

Over the past four months, almost 28,000 citations have been distributed to non-compliant operators, according to the media outlet. Governor M. Jodi Rell told the news source that most offenders were cited for defective lights. Other violations included speeding, overloading vehicles and failing to keep federally required logs up-to-date.

According to area law firm Williams, Walsh and O'Connor, Connecticut officials are also focusing on safety issues such as distracted driving, improper maintenance, driver fatigue as well as DUI and DWI.

Drivers who have completed online courses in safety may be less likely to receive similar citations, as they will know how to stay in compliance with state and federal regulations.
