Bad road conditions prompts the industry to push for trucking safety courses for inexperienced drivers

Created: Wednesday, February 9th, 2011 05:01 am

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) recently announced that it cannot assure motorists that major highway will be without delays after uncharacteristically cold weather hit the region, the Clarion Ledger reports.

Officials told the media outlet that recent accidents along the I-55/I-20 Stack have caused delays. Salt trucks were deployed to help make conditions safer. However, the Highway Safety Patrol deemed the bridge unsafe for drivers. They added that there was little they could do after an 18-wheeler jackknifed on the highway.

Inexperienced truckers who have not worked with inclement weather may have an increased risk of being involved in accidents. These reports are not specific to this region, as truckers in Texas, Illinois and New York have recently had difficulties with driver safety and road conditions.

Safety directors whose fleets travel across the U.S. may want to consider enrolling their employees in online truck driver safety training courses. These classes could help operators learn how to handle certain weather condition and better determine whether they should be on the road.
