Accident investigation leads to heightened trucking safety awareness
After further investigation of an accident in 2009 involving a big rig, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has issued further precautionary warnings to truckers who handle large vehicles loaded with hazardous materials.
Two years ago, a driver lost control of a fuel truck while traveling on a main highway in Indiana. The accident that followed caused a rollover of the truck and fires that harmed the driver and other motorists. The cause of the problem was undetermined until recently. Once the NTSB concluded that this accident may have been prevented, they issued recommendations to various organizations to improve trucking safety conditions.
Among the groups addressed by the NTSB was the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). They ask that the FMCSA arrange better rollover prevention programs to ensure the protection of truckers and others on the nation's highways.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration was called to regulate the mechanical systems of all trucks that weigh more than 10,000 pounds to keep standards high and streamlined, which may help avoid any equipment-related mistakes in the future.
