ATA pushes Congress to pass new highway transportation bill
The American Trucking Associations (ATA) recently told members of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee that the trucking industry needs Congress to pass a new surface transportation bill focused on highways.
Officials said that trucks move nearly 70 percent of freight in the U.S., but the current highway system no longer meets the needs of companies, motorists and trucking safety. Furthermore, a safe, efficient system of highways may be essential to the country's economic well-being.
"Every day, freight flows through our ports, across our borders, and on our rail, highway, air and waterway systems as part of a global multimodal transportation logistics system," Barbara Windsor, president and CEO of Hahn Transportation and chairman of the ATA. "Highways are the key to this system."
Safety directors may wish to enroll their students in online truck driver training courses to help operators learn to safely drive their vehicles despite hazardous conditions.
According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, nearly 74,000 injuries were attributed to large truck accidents in 2009.
