ATA promoted trucking safety in Tennessee

Although it may be tempting to drive long hauls with taking a rest, the Tennessee Truck Association is urging drivers to consider the dangers of these habits by launching a program called Safety Break.

The American Trucking Association (ATA) is supporting this program by bringing one of its high-tech trailers to a rest stop in the Tennessee town of Athens. By handing out complimentary refreshments, the organizations say they hope to promote trucking safety to all motorists.

Staying alert and ready for the unpredictability of being behind the wheel of a big rig are important factors to maintain in a trucking career. Driver for Wal-Mart Transportation, Kenny Lowry, says trucker health is essential, especially during high volume weekends.

"The July 4th holiday is a busy time on the highways and by educating the motorists about highway safety we feel can make a difference and save lives," he said.

The truck stop spectacle is sponsored by the America's Road Team, which is a national group geared towards driving accident prevention. The members are truckers who have years of experience and millions of miles under their belts driven accident-free.
