ATA and MADD work together to battle drunk driving

Driving is dangerous while under the influence, and being intoxicated while operating a truck is hazardous to the driver and other motorists on the road. Recently, the American Trucking Association (ATA) teamed up with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to raise awareness about the risks of drinking and driving, reports Trucking Info.

The new initiative will focus primarily on key strategies for reducing the number of drunk drivers on the road. ATA and MADD support extra police officers and sobriety checkpoints on the highways to deter dangerous behavior.

They would also like those who've been convicted of driving under the influence (DUI) to have breathalyzers installed in their vehicles and possible passive resistance technology to keep the car or truck from working if the driver has a blood alcohol content over the legal limit.
Officials from both organizations are lobbying for changes that will ensure trucking safety and reduce preventative accidents among motorists.

According to DrinkingAndDriving.org, about 900,000 drivers, including truckers, were arrested last year for DUIs. At least one-third of these individuals were arrested more than once for the same drinking and driving offense.
