Texas implements technology to speed up inspection times

Created: Thursday, March 17th, 2011 03:01 pm

Tighter regulations concerning truck driving safety have prompted many state and federal authorities to conduct more compliance reviews. However, the Texas Department of Public Safety is equipping five of its truck inspection facilities with the "PrePass" commercial safety technology to speed up the process, news station KXAN reports.

The PrePass will allow commercial trucks that are equipped with transponders to be screened at designated weigh stations. Cleared vehicles can bypass the inspection facility while traveling at highway speeds.

"By screening commercial vehicles at highway speeds for compliance with Texas safety and credential requirements, we can help our troopers and inspectors focus on those commercial vehicles most in need of inspections,” Steven C. McCraw, director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, told the news source.

Safety directors may wish to enroll their drivers in CSA 2010 compliance training to help them understand the new and developing changes that have hit the industry.

Texas joins 29 other states that have implemented the PrePass electronic screening technology. Furthermore, nearly 400,000 trucks have enrolled in the service nationwide.
