Survey shows majority of drivers support extra gas taxes

Although an increase in taxes on fuel may cause some short term headaches, a recent national survey found that many drivers are in favor of additional taxes if the roads are well-maintained and other driving conditions are improved, reports Trucking Info.

Hilary Nixon, Ph. D., who helped conduct the survey, claims that the U.S. is in extreme need for higher gas taxed to help fix some of the transportation issues nationwide.

"With more fuel-efficient vehicles, less revenue is generated per gallon," she told the news source. "At the same time, the U.S. transportation system requires critical and expensive system upgrades."

According to the National Academy of Sciences, participants in the study were more supportive of certain causes than others if faced with a tax increase. The most popular was taking a proposed ten cents a gallon and using it for road repair. Others said they would like to see revenue put towards cleaning up air pollution caused by emissions or to aid in making all motorists safer on the road.
