Senators urge government to endorse more hybrid and electric trucks

Created: Friday, July 8th, 2011 04:01 pm

There are ways to make environmentally-friendly vehicles go hand-in-hand with saving costs for truck company owners. Senator Susan Collins, along with her two democratic senator colleagues are proposing a bill that would help fund extra research to explore the possibilities of hybrid and electric trucks, reports the Foster's Daily Journal.

Collins says that with about 70 percent of all U.S. goods being transported by the trucking industry, it may be essential to work on ways to cut emissions and pollution among freight transporting vehicles. She would like to financially aid truck companies as well, with the switch into greener hauling techniques.

"The average price of diesel in our state remains just under $4 a gallon," Collins told the news source. "This is a huge burden for so many truckers and small businesses."

Some trucking companies are already jumping aboard this idea of introducing fuel-efficient trucks to their fleet management methods. For example, the North American division of Coca-Cola boasts more than 650 hybrid big rigs in its convoy, making the business number one in emission-reducing trucks, reports the Atlanta Business News. The company has plans of adding an additional six vehicles to the fleet.
