Programs support more truck testing to keep roads safe

The massive presence of big trucks on the road may not be as regulated as it should. Recently, the American Trucking Association (ATA) and the Owner Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) have pushed for extra precautions and testing to be done on big-rigs that will keep truckers and other drivers safe, reports Fleet Owner.

Both organizations have petitioned to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which is in charge of the regulations. The NHTSA has extensively tested small trucks and automobiles, but the OOIDA and ATA want to see more research done on larger vehicles to ensure more truck driving safety.

The executive vice president of OOIDA, Todd Spencer, says he looks forward to the ongoing partnership with ATA and hopes their efforts will keep more truckers safe.

"The most valuable, even most precious, cargo truckers haul is themselves and it’s time that our standards reflect that value," he told the news source.

According to the NHTSA website, the organization was established in 1970 to protect and educate all drivers on the road, especially on highways and heavily trafficked areas.
