Potential bill promotes public trucking performance records

Oftentimes, fleet management requires business owners to monitor trucking safety while their drivers are on the road to ensure the protection of all motorists. Recently, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has advocated the public release of these driver performance and safety statistics, reports The Commercial Carrier Journal.

The organization says they hope to integrate the idea into an upcoming highway bill. As of now, various tests and ranking can only be selectively accessed by potential employees. The FMCSA would like to have the record more easily accessible to everyone. The percentages of incidents would mirror those of how regular motorists are ranked.

Having truck driving safety out in the open to compare drivers' performances may motivate those in the business to better their skills and driving abilities.

Joe Rajkovacz, government affairs specialist and member of the Owner Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA), says he is worried about the bill passing because driver's have privacy rights, reports Overdrive.

"Motor carriers have due process under the regulations and use it to fight adverse safety fitness determinations," he told the news source. "There are likely to be constitutional issues in play here since individuals arguably have more protected rights than a company."
