Plans to extend deadline for transportation bill announced by Obama

President Barack Obama has been making strides towards improving the laws that ensure trucking safety and security within the commercial transportation industry. Recently, the President announced his plans to extend the deadline for the term transportation regulations bill that is being discussed by the House and Senate.

Originally, the current bill in place expires on September 30th, but President Obama asked to extend this deadline to ensure the government will properly handle these important and extensive regulations.

The American Trucking Associations (ATA) supports the President's plans for an extension on the law.

David Osiecki, the ATA's senior vice president of policy and regulatory affairs, said that the organization supports more funding by raised taxes on fuel, which will ensure that necessary road projects may be completed to repair and improve the nation's transportation routes.

He added, "We must invest in the highways and bridges that carry nearly 70 percent of the nation's freight, rather than on things that aren't part of a core federal program, including rail, transit and non-highway projects."
