New proposed regulations expose more truckers to stringent regulations

Officials from the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) recently announced that they have reduced the weight limit for vehicles that must meet more stringent safety standards, The Columbus Dispatch reports.

Two House representatives are proposing a bill that would put a on hold most of the new safety laws for trucks weighing more than 10,000 pounds. Under the current regulations, drivers must provide additional documentation, certification and physicals, and submit to more vehicle inspections.

"I think everybody wants to see drivers behind the wheel, especially for a business, that are medically capable of driving, can speak English, and are driving a vehicle with maintenance and safety records," M. Beth Trombold, director of the PUCO's Office of Public Affairs, told the news source.

The proposed bill will be similar to Ohio's hazmat regulations to the federal standard and repeal the additional requirements. Many are concerned that the rules will put costly burdens on small business owners who operate pickup trucks that pull trailers.

Online truck driver training courses can help safety directors provide their employees with recurrent hazmat training to keep them up-to-date with emerging trends in the industry.
