New proposals aim to step up enforcement of current regulations
Officials from Nebraska State Patrol recently stated that the new proposals that are expected to be implemented in the Compliance Safety Accountability Program will be geared toward truck driver fatigue, fitness, alcohol abuse and other safety basics, The Chadron Record reports.
Local police have been increasing their efforts to monitor the logbooks drivers use to track their hours on the road. This measure goes beyond the standard procedure of checking for bald tires, bad brakes and other safety shortcomings that require inspectors to place trucks out of service when these problems are discovered.
"It is going to be a challenge for the industry," Jim Mullen, Werner Enterprises consultant, told the news provider. "It is a new safety scoring system for all motor carriers, and it is not a perfect system, by any means."

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration reports that more than 3 million driver inspections were conducted in 2006.
