Safety directors who are worried about trucker health and safety in their fleets may soon have a new way to ensure that their employees are getting enough rest. In fact, they may be required to do so, pending the passage of some proposed legislation.
Recently, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration drafted a proposal that states that all interstate commercial truck and bus companies should install electronic on-board recorders (EOBRS) on their vehicles.
New Jersey Senator Frank R. Lautenberg is an enthusiastic advocate of this proposal. Earlier this week, he released a statement to show his support for the would-be law.
The legislator believes that use of these devices would prevent problems that are caused by practices such as lying in logbooks and working more hours than are allowed by federal law.
"Installing this technology in every commercial truck is a common-sense way to protect all drivers and passengers on the road," Senator Lautenberg said.
"Simply put, this rule would save lives."
Online truck driver safety training courses could help large vehicle operators stay up-to-date on legislative changes to their industries.
