National Labor Relations Board to file complaint against Australian company

Created: Friday, January 6th, 2012 12:01 pm

The National Labor Relations Board plans to file a complaint against Australia's Toll Group- the U.S. trucking carrier for Guess? and Polo Ralph Lauren - for using many unfair labor practices to retaliate against its West Coast employees in the United States for trying to organize a union.

Out of the 75 regional truck drivers in the region, 62 have signed a petition to begin a delegation with clergy and community advocates to implore Toll's local management to recognize them as a union.

"They wanted us to keep our heads down but instead we took action together and now the tables are turned," said Luis Alay, a truck driver who is a part of the movement. "Management should pay a price for treating us like second-class citizens. We work long, hard hours away from our families."

Recognizing the employees as a union would likely improve the truckers' health, allowing them to fight for more rights with their employers, including working hours and driving conditions.

While union membership is sought after by the Toll truckers, there is ongoing controversy as to the efficacy of unions in a 21st century economy. According to the Canada Free Press, a deregulated trucking industry sparked greater competition, allowing for employees to push for higher wages, as well as more employee benefits.
