Mapping company helps Illinois officials pass new trucking navigation laws

Illinois is making great strides towards ensuring a higher level of trucking safety on the state's highways. Recently, Governor Pat Quinn endorsed some new rules in regards to trucks utilizing GPS systems and monitoring traffic routes while on the job.

Rand McNally, a company that produces maps and travel content, formed a team called the Task Force which lobbied for these new safety measures to be passed in Illinois.

There will be several new pieces of legislation that fleet management owners must have their drivers adhere to, including additional education on GPS in trucks. State officials will now need to report truck networks within their areas in a newly designed reporting method that is planned to streamline the routing data collection process.

Representative Michael Zalewski said that the features that differ from GPS used in commercial trucks and regular vehicles can be significant to know for a trucker.

He added, "Using the appropriate 'tool' for the job will benefit the citizens of Illinois by reducing accidents, congestion, and the costs of repairing infrastructure damaged by accidents involving commercial vehicles."
