Law passed banning hand-held cellphone use for commercial truckers nationwide
After all the discussions and debates that have occurred over cellphone use by commercial truckers, a final ruling has been made by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Those who operate commercial trucks and buses will no longer be permitted to use any hand-held cellphones while navigating their vehicles on the nation's roadways.
The new law will take effect by the beginning of January, one month after the official statement and paperwork was passed by the FMCSA. No driver will be allowed to hold a cellphone in their hand while driving with the other, and, if they break the rule, they can face disciplinary actions. Offenses will count as traffic violations and several accrued infractions can lead to a commercial driving license being revoked.
Truckers who have recently completed their CDL training and are beginning their career should avoid breaking this newly sanctioned law. Investing in a hands-free device or simply pulling over to make an important call may be advisable to avoid potential accidents and stay within federal compliance.
