"Jason's Law" pushed by supporters of trucker safety
Even when drivers follow all the safety rules while managing their trucks, accidents can still happen. In 2009, truck driver Jason Rivenburg was robbed and lost his life while parked at a truck stop. His family is lobbying for new bills to be passed that will improve the trucking safety at these rest areas, reports The Trucker.
The bill would grant funds to add extra safety features to these locations that can sometimes fall short of parking spaces, which puts drivers in dangerous situations when they stop their trucks away from the regulated areas.
Incidents similar to Rivenburg's death continue to occur, which has caused advocates to lobby for the funding even more. In 2008, another truck driver was murdered In Florida for a few dollars in the middle of the night, reports Land Line. The suspect is being arraigned this month.
Joe Rajkovacz, member of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, says it is very important more laws are passed to help truck drivers in danger.
He told the news source, "Everyone wants what’s in the trailer but nobody seems to want to help the trucker by giving him a safe place to land."
