First Mexican company approved under cross-border laws

Now that the new legislation for cross-border trucking between the U.S. and Mexico is rolling into effect, many trucking companies are looking to participate in these new endeavors. According to BusinessWeek, one Mexican trucking company has already received clearance to partake in the initiative.

Transportes Olympic in Monterrey, Mexico, will be allowed to move beyond the previously designated 25-mile crossover area to enter the U.S. with certain imported materials. This company was supposed to be among the first when this bill originally went into play two years ago, but was never officially carried through. Permits for both the U.S. and Mexico are being granted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

Not only will the borders be open in more places for crossing, but various tariffs on both sides will also be dissolved, which may mean additional benefits for trucking companies that do business within both nations.

“This is a big win for American farmers and consumers, who will no longer have to struggle with onerous tariffs imposed by Mexico,” Ray LaHood, transportation secretary of the FMCSA, said in a statement.

According to The Trucker, Grupo Behr is also on the wait list to be granted access, and awaits further investigations by the FMCSA for approval.
